Andrea López-Mobilia

Cohort 7 (2021-2023)

Tell us a little bit about where you are now after graduating from the ACES programme?

I am currently pursuing a PhD funded by the European Commission as part of the Marie-Sklodowska Curie Action (MSCA) under the Horizon Europe framework. My Doctoral Network, HOTBIO (www.hotbio.eu), focuses on marine biodiscovery, specifically developing secondary metabolites from marine microorganisms into well-characterized compounds with applications as medicines, agrochemicals, or aquaculture drugs. I am based at the Stazione Zoologica Anton Dohrn in the Ecosustainable Marine Biotechnology department in Naples (Italy). My project focuses on isolating rare marine bacteria from corals in the Maldives. By using genomics, metabolomics, and cultivation approaches like OSMAC, I aim to discover new natural products such as antimicrobials and antioxidants, and enhance their production for different biotechnological applications.

How was your ACES experience and how did it contribute to your personal and professional development in the aquaculture industry?

The ACES programme was an incredibly well-rounded experience. It gave me a comprehensive understanding of various areas of aquaculture, and in combination with the elective courses it allow me to explore and define my interests. Although my primary focus was the microbiology aspect (a field not immediately associated with aquaculture), ACES allowed me to pursue an internship and thesis in my chosen area. This not only expanded my knowledge but also gave me the practical experience needed to confidently pursue a PhD in this field.

Best part about being an ACES student?

The sense of community. My cohort formed a close-knit group, and I'm still in contact with many of them. Additionally, learning from former ACES students was great as their experiences offered insights into life after the programme and what to expect next.

Most challenging part of the ACES programme?

For me, the most challenging aspect was managing visa-related issues. However, with planning and good organization, everything was resolved in time for everyone.

Any advice for current and prospective ACES students?

For current students: Don't wait until the last minute to think about your next steps! Start exploring your options early. Also, network, ask questions, engage with professionals in your field, and build connections in the different places you'll be in these 2 years!

And for possible students: Just apply!
