Our Students – A Truly International Crowd!

Since the first cohort of EMJM ACES students in 2015, we have welcomed students from over 32 countries across the globe. Our students have joined us from New Zealand, Belize, Jamaica, Zimbabwe, China, Bangladesh, USA, Philippines, Israel, Peru, Colombia, Ukraine, India, Singapore, Russia, Kenya, Mexico and many more countries. They are a truly an international group! As the students spend the first three semesters as one cohort they become a very strong team, with friendships lasting well beyond the lifetime of the course.

Students benefit from specialist lectures and practical work, including field trips and internships, delivered by a team of dedicated lecturers and international guest scholars. Teaching staff and guest scholars provide students with an altogether global insight into the aquaculture industry. Whilst based at the University of Crete, all students have the opportunity to undertake a 3-month internship based in the aquaculture industry. Students have worked on a range of research projects covering, for example, larval rearing of Ostrea edulis, Sargassum cultivation and fish farming impact on macroalgal communities, Aquaculture Higher Education Training in Cambodia: A Q-methodology Study and Curriculum Comparison, Water Temperature at Early Ontogeny and Maturation of the HPI axis in gilthead seabream, Sparus aurata, Disease and Vaccination Challenge for Streptococcus iniae in Brown Marbled Grouper, and Exploring the Effects of a Commercial Insect Meal on Dicentrarchus labrax Juveniles.

After they have completed their dissertation (fourth semester), students have the opportunity to get together again as a cohort at the Student Conference. This event is held in July of each year and students present the findings of their research to a wide audience that includes teaching staff and scholars, industry partners, and other organisations involved in the aquaculture sector.
